The well known Thomas Train pictures of today are not what were originally drawn. It is true that each machine was designed to have a dissimilar facial expression but they were mostly sad expressions. The Reverend explained the imagine to his son as they are old and tired engines. The saddest was Edward. His sadness was due to not being used and left at the terminal. This was surely the starting of the first story that was written down. The first story line was named "Edward's Day Out."
Once the series was commercialized in the 1980's the smiles started to appear on a regular basis. This is the most recognized expression on most of the Thomas the Tank machine pictures. It is Thomas and his notable smile. Other characters in many of the pictures with Thomas are the cheerful Percy, Moody James, the Proud and Boastful Gordon, Bertie the Bus, Terence the Tractor, Harold the Helicopter and the coaches of Annie and Clarabel.
Harold The Helicopter Thomas
Most of the scenes are from the island of Sodor. This is a fictional island in the middle of the Isle of Man and the coast of England in the Irish Sea. This island was created so the story lines of the books would be consistent but isolated from the rest of the British railway system, so the Reverend could be creative with his story lines.

At present there are still new pictures of Thomas and his friends being produced from the new story lines and from the imagination of artists. The one constant in all of the Thomas Train pictures is the fact that he is blue with a big #1 on his side.
